MIND PIX RECOMMENDED LISTENING Ghislain Poirier Ghisy Ghis wowed audiences across the states last winter when he left his Montreal basement lab to open Lady Sovereign’s US tour with insanely loud, speaker-humping DJ sets. Upcoming reggae remixes with Mr Lee G will burn your ears off when they drop this spring, but in the meantime you can cop Poirier’s Breakupdown LP, check his Bounce Le Gros night at Zoobizarre in MTL and hear more at ghhislainpoirier.com. The Bug ft Warrier Queen “Dem A Bomb We” (Ladybug) UK electro-dancehall producer The Bug sent me this track by email, and it’s become my DJ secret weapon. A commanding grime/ raga beat meets the eloquent and unique presence of Warrior Queen for massive party destruction. Powerful. Daara-J “Bopp Sa Bopp” (Wrasse Records) African ho-hop is mostly ignored in North American, but there’s a huge scene there. Dakar is one of the most active cities on the continent with tons of groups, and Daara-J has been leading the pack for the past eight years. “Bopp Sa Bopp” blends French and Wolof lyrics, while traditional drums make some kind of double time dirty south beat. Mr Flash “Supa Chick” (Arcade Mode) Deep instrumental hip-hop track by French producer Mr Flash (who made beats for the first TTC album). This collage of seemingly Asian samples over a simple bass line is a perfect starter track for a DJ set- it puts people in a good mood! The kind of song you can play twice in a row. Cuizinier “J’aime Bouger Ca” (Disques Primeur) Superb booty production by DJ Orgasmic, flipping a filthy French rap version of “I Like To Move It”. Cuizinier is perfect here too- this has become an anthem at my Bounce Le Gros nights in Montreal. |
